Improving CARMA Data

We’d like to think that CARMA has a pretty comprehensive database of plant emissions data. There were a lot of numbers to crunch, and we tried our best to present this data in the clearest possible way. What you see on this site is pretty much all the data we’ve been able to collect. With that being said, our data isn’t perfect. Our data suppliers and researchers did an amazing job at raking through the data, but there’s always going to be discrepancies. For example, we’ve noticed that power plant coordinates aren’t as accurate as we had hoped.

Another concern with the power plant data is that it’s not very personal. We can get a rough idea of the fuel type and size of a plant based on its name, power ratings and emissions. What we can’t currently get from our database are things like alternate names, community impact, EPA violations, lawsuits, plant photos, fuel type, and other useful bits of information that some careful googling or trekking could shed some light on.

Within the next week or so, we’ll be rolling out an interactive new CARMA widget.

This widget will default to showing only plants relevant to your location, with the option to view plants in any one or all states/countries. You’ll be able to see plants near you, and will have the freedom to submit information about these plants. You’ll also be challenged with trying to locate and mark the exact plant location in sort of a friendly competition with other users. If you have any ideas on how to improve the CARMA data, feel free to contact us!
