CARMA in Action: Interfaith Forum on Wise Country Power Plant
One role of CARMA is to provide information on plant and firm-level CO2 emissions to local activists trying to block new coal fired powerplants. I am involved in one such effort in Northern Virginia, where a group with the wonderful name Interfaith Power and Light (GWIPLE) is working to organize religious organizations to combat climate change.
As part of this, GWIPLE, my synagogue and a nearby Presbyterian church will be hosting an interfaith forum tomorrow (Wed, April 30) on mountaintop removal mining and a Dominion Resources Inc.’s proposed coal-fired plant in Wise County, VA., which would have emissions nearly equivalent to the entire power sector of Jordan and would be fueled with coal obtained by blowing up one of the oldest and most bilogically diverse mountain ranges in the world.
Steve Mufson, energy correspondent for the Washington Post, will serve as moderator. We will have a speaker from the Sierra Club, and one from the newly created American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, the latest incarnation of the coal industry’s $35 million spin machine.
It should be a lively session! All are welcome and fellow bloggers are invited to help spread the word.

I want to thank you Lawrence, your synagogue, and neighboring presbyterian church for taking the iniative to hold a forum on the topic of the Dominion Hybrid Energy Center power plant. As a resident of Southwest Virginia and one very concerned by climate change, and with coal surface mining methods, I support you in the effort to spread the word about the damage this plant will cause. I wish you every success
